Toy Awards and Award Winning Toys

Like most anything, from books to TV shows, remarkable toys also receive awards! Independent reviewers, magazines, and non-profit organizations are just some of the many groups that review and award toys every year, sharing the merits and benefits of the award-winning toys with the public.

Growing Tree Toys has included award information on our website, highlighting those toys that have received an award from a select group of toy award presenters. While there are many possible awards available in the toy industry, we have narrowed down the product awards shown on our site to just a few of the best awards available. The goal of a smaller awards group is to help shoppers make purchase decisions by understanding these select awards better, rather than confusing them with too many different awards options.

We provide award information for the toys on our website that have received awards from the following groups:

Mensa Select Seal
Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Awards
Parent’s Choice Foundation Awards
Parenting Magazine Toys of the Year Awards
The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval

If a toy has received an award from one of these groups, that product’s page will include the relevant award information. We hope that highlighting these award-winning toys will help you shop, and if you want more information about any of these awards, please see the overview below or visit their websites for more information.

Mensa Select Seal
American Mensa, part of Mensa International, Ltd., includes more than 50,000 members that all have one thing in common – high intelligence. Every year, Mensans participate in Mind Games®, a weekend of playing and critiquing the year’s newest games. At the end of this mind-bending weekend, Mensa awards the Mensa Select® seal to the Top 5 games for that year – a short, and coveted, list to be sure!

Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Awards
Presenting awards since 1989, the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio was founded as the only independent review of children’s media. In addition to publishing a newsletter, the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio tests and reviews toys year-round to find the best of the best. And, since they do not charge an entrance fee for product submission like some groups, their awards are truly based on the selections of noted experts and real kids and families. The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio features a Platinum Award (their highest), a Gold Seal Award, and the Special Needs Award.

Parent’s Choice Foundation Awards
If you are looking for an organization that knows toys, the Parent’s Choice Foundation is the oldest non-profit that provides guidance on children’s media and toys. Established in 1978, the purpose of the Foundation “is to search out and recommend products that help kids grow – imaginatively, physically, morally and mentally—fairly priced products that are fun, safe and socially sound.” To this end, the Parent’s Choice Foundation presents the following awards to toys: Parent’s Choice Gold, Parent’s Choice Silver, Parent’s Choice Classic, Parent’s Choice Recommended, Parent’s Choice Approved, and Parent’s Choice Fun. While their multi-tiered evaluation process is confidential, you can trust that these award-winning toys are great for kids!

Parenting Magazine Toys of the Year Awards
A trusted publication for parents nationwide, Parenting Magazine also features a yearly toy awards program. This awards program differs from others in that it is predominantly based on feedback from children and their moms – who test hundreds of products to find the best ones! Sometimes hearing it from your peers is more meaningful!

The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval
The National Parenting Center created their Seal of Approval program in 1990, which is the perfect extension of their intention to “advise, support and guide parents with sound, responsible advice.” The Seal of Approval program identifies the finest toy products for children by utilizing a consumer-oriented testing process that relies on evaluations from parents and their children.
