Poison Dart Frogs live throughout the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. They are known for their bright colors, which can include eye-popping shades of red, yellow, blue, and black. They are also extremely toxic.
History: For centuries, indigenous people of Columbia used the poison of these colorful frogs to coat the tips of their blow darts, leading to the Poison Dart Frog’s common nickname. The poison is incredibly powerful, which is why predators steer clear of these colorful creatures. Scientists aren’t yet sure where the frogs obtain the poison, but species raised in captivity do not develop it, so it’s assumed the deadly poison comes from some element of the frog’s diet.
